# Indices-API

> Real-time and historical market indices JSON API: S&P 500, Nasdaq, Dow Jones, FTSE 100, and 200+ world indices.

Indices-API is a REST API for stock-index market data. Use it to fetch live levels, historical closes, time series, fluctuations, conversions, OHLC, and intraday candles. Authenticate every REST request with the query parameter `access_key`. Get a key at https://indices-api.com/register.

REST requires `?access_key=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY` on every request.

## Authentication

REST (query parameter `access_key`):

MCP: send `Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY`. Do not put the key in the URL (`?api_key=` or `?apikey=`) — Claude Desktop and claude.ai reject tokens in the query string. There is no OAuth client. Do not use `npx` or `mcp-remote`.

Keys are created after signup. Keep the key secret — never expose it in client-side JavaScript or public repos. Rotate it from the account area if compromised.

## MCP (AI agents)

Indices-API exposes the same data via Model Context Protocol:

- Setup page: https://indices-api.com/mcp
- MCP endpoint: `https://indices-api.mcp.indices-api.com/mcp` (no key in the URL)
- Auth: `Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY`. Claude Desktop and claude.ai reject `?api_key=` and `?apikey=`. There is no OAuth client.
- Discovery: https://indices-api.com/.well-known/mcp.json
- Tools: `indices.symbols`, `indices.latest`, `indices.historical`, `indices.convert`, `indices.time_series`, `indices.fluctuation`, `indices.ohlc`, `indices.intraday`

Use `"url"` for the remote server. Do not use `npx` or `mcp-remote`.

## Endpoints

- `GET /symbols` — Supported index and currency symbols. MCP: `indices.symbols`
- `GET /latest` — Real-time index rates (`base`, `symbols`). MCP: `indices.latest`
- `GET /{YYYY-MM-DD}` — Historical closing rates for a past date. MCP: `indices.historical`
- `GET /convert` — Convert an amount between symbols (`from`, `to`, `amount`, optional `date`). MCP: `indices.convert`
- `GET /timeseries` — Daily rates between `start_date` and `end_date`. MCP: `indices.time_series`
- `GET /fluctuation` — Absolute and percent change between two dates. MCP: `indices.fluctuation`
- `GET /open-high-low-close/{YYYY-MM-DD}` — OHLC prices for a trading day. MCP: `indices.ohlc`
- `GET /intraday` — Intraday candles (`symbol`, `base`, `date`, `interval`). MCP: `indices.intraday`
