Why the S&P 500 Paused After the AI Rally
The cash S&P 500 paused after an AI-led Monday. Reuters (22 September 2026, 12:06 p.m. ET) had the S&P 500 at 7,760.02, down 0.06%, the Dow at 51,769.52 (−0.56%), and the Nasdaq Composite at an intraday record 27,185.77 (+0.24%). Meta added 0.9% after Monday’s 11% jump; JPMorgan and Wells Fargo were each down nearly 4%, which is why the S&P barely moved while Nasdaq printed a high. Traders watched US–Iran comments, oil near $100, the 10-year near 4.9%, and Thursday’s US–China summit. CME FedWatch priced a 53.1% chance of another 25 bp hike in October after this month’s move.
That Reuters cash print is not the Indices-API ticker. The product homepage widget showed GSPC at 5735.26 on 22 September; the symbol page last-update stamp is 21 September 2026. Persist /api/latest, not a newswire close, and do not equate 5735 with 7,760.
